There’s no doubt that Hamilton is a music city. From all of the amazing local artists, to hosting the JUNO Awards six times (more than any other city!), to the amazingly successful (and ever-growing) annual SuperCrawl, Hamilton has definitely marked its spot on the Canadian music landscape.
At Hamilton Public Library, we love music too, and so we’ve developed a music strategy that supports music collections, services and programming, as well as local musicians. Whatever your connection is to music – for business or pleasure – Music Lives Here.
I’ve Got Two Turntables and a Microphone
If you’re an aspiring or established musician, come use our Makerspaces and Sound Studios to play and record music, or use our editing software and sound mixing equipment. Whatever your musical needs, we can help.
Looking to be the next “Piano Man”, Billy Joel? Or John Legend? Then our piano practice room is for you. Reserve your time in the piano practice room at Central Library – because we all know that practice makes perfect!
If the keyboard is more your instrument of choice, head over to Terryberry or Red Hill Branches to practice on a MIDI keyboard with headset. Get lost in your music-making with our latest state-of-the-art equipment, all available to you for the low, low price of FREE (Ok, there is a catch: you need to have an HPL Library Card).
Adagio for Strings
Take a break from the office and drop by Central Library every Friday (from September through June) during lunch for performances featuring local musicians. Come and listen to the sounds of the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra and groups such as the music ensembles from Mohawk College.
Standing in Line to See the Show Tonight
Stay tuned for our upcoming Concerts in the Round at our Circuit 4.0, located on Central Library’s 4th Floor. Some of our past performers include The Trews, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, 54-40, and the special Blame it on Hamilton JUNO show. Our ticketed events are presented in partnership with Front Room Entertainment.
The Wheels on the Bus Go Round and Round
Get out of the house and bring your children to our Storytime sessions. From a variety of songs, rhymes, music and stories, the kids will want to come back for more! Songs are a natural way for children to learn about language, so these interactive sessions are a great (and fun!) way to foster important literacy skills for the future.
Play that Funky Music
Build your digital music collection with some of our digital services such as Freegal and Hoopla that let you to download and stream music and videos. Remember those round discs called CDs that everyone bought when a new album dropped? We have those too for your borrowing pleasure!
And yes, we still have books. Titles in both physical and digital formats feature everything from the history of music to musician biographies, and so much more. You can read the latest issues of magazines such as Billboard, Rolling Stone and Opera Canada for free on the RBdigital app (formerly called Zinio).
